The Royal Society of Biology welcomes the Prime Minister’s decision to create an enhanced focus on science and energy through two new departments of State: the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, both led by Cabinet level posts.
The Society has been appealing to Government for increased investment in science, highlighting the returns to the UK economy, through letters, a submission to the upcoming budget and our manifesto for the next General Election.
We believe these new departments, both with a seat at the Cabinet table are a great opportunity to facilitate further interdisciplinary approaches to address some of the UK and world’s biggest challenges.
To realise the full potential of UK science and innovation, there must be a fully cohesive approach that embeds skills and training and links these across government departments and the devolved assemblies. Success will depend on cross-government action and investment, not just an expensive re-branding.
We are glad to see that this new structure will recognise the key role of science in society and the UK economy, and provide a strong basis for leadership across Government departments.
RSB looks forward to increased engagement with the new science department on issues that matter to our members in order to advance UK biosciences.
