A guided tour around St Catherine's Hill Nature Reserve in Winchester.

Join the Wessex branch committee for a tour around St Catherine's Hill Nature Reserve, a chalk downland hill particularly known for its 25 species of butterflies, orchids (including bee, fragrant and pyramidal orchids) and other wildflowers, which should be flowering at that time. A steep 220ft climb up St Catherine's Hill's wooden stairs reveals views of Winchester City, as well as the Itchen Valley floodplains and downland.

British white cattle and sheep graze at the site and a wide variety of birds can be seen. If the weather is warm, attendees should have the opportunity to spot many butterflies including Chalkhill Blues, Brown Argus and Marbled Whites.

Please note: Suitable footwear and clothing for walking over rough ground in a variety of weathers are advised.

Location

Attendees will meet at 10:15 for a 10:30 start in St Catherine's Hill carpark (just before the bridge over the river), Garnier Rd, Winchester SO23 9PA. This is a small carpark - further parking can be found at the East Winchester Park and Ride (St Catherine's, SO23 9NP) which is a short (5 min) walk from St Catherine's Hill.
