This course explores fundamental topics of biorisk management. Each topic will be delivered as either eLearning or an instructor-led in-person training. The in-person part of the course will take place at The Pirbright Institute over a period of four days.
eLearning modules (nine hours):
- Biorisk management, including:
- Principles of biorisk management
- Engagement and impact
- Monitoring
- Ethics and sustainability
- Competence and training
- Waste management
- Principles of transport of infectious substances
In-person modules (four days):
- Risk assessment
- Biological hazards
- Personal protective equipment
- Containment and control
- Genetic modification
- Incident management
The course will be facilitated by multiple subject matter experts working at The Pirbright Institute, including members of:
- The Pirbright Training team
- The Health, Safety & Biosafety (HSBS) team
- The in-house engineering department
In addition, it will include tours of operational state-of-the-art facilities, including:
- The BBSRC National Vaccinology Centre: The Jenner Building
- The BBSRC National Virology Centre: The Plowright Building
Who should attend
This course is designed primarily for (1) health and safety advisors and professionals who oversee operation of biological containment laboratories, and (2) facility managers.
Requirements and qualifications
Basic experience of working within biological laboratories is recommended. The course is presented in English.
CPD
This training is approved by the Royal Society of Biology. Training course approval is an independent review process that recognises relevant, high quality training. Upon completion of this course, attendees can claim 135 CPD points.
